Air New Zealand Direct Flights Christchurch to Tokyo

Direct from Christchurch to Japan

A Game Changer for South Island Skiers

If you’ve been heading to Japan from the South Island, you’ve had to add an extra flight. Via Auckland, every time. Hours of extra travel, extra cost, extra hassle. That just changed.

Air New Zealand has announced three new direct routes from Christchurch International Airport from late 2026: Tokyo Narita, Singapore, and Perth (all subject to Government approvals). For skiers and snowboarders in the South Island, this is great news. The Tokyo route is the one that matters most for us. From Christchurch, you can now fly direct to Japan. No Auckland connection, no double-flight day.

Why Direct Changes Everything

Flying directly from Christchurch to Tokyo cuts hours off your journey. More importantly, it cuts the cost of a domestic flight to Auckland and back. For a family of four or a group of mates, that’s a real saving. You also land in Japan fresher. One long flight beats two shorter ones plus the airport shuffle in between.

The flights operate on Air New Zealand’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, fitted with the airline’s newly retrofitted long-haul cabin. That means upgraded seats and finishes across Economy, Premium Economy, and the redesigned Business Premier suite, along with the latest in-flight entertainment system. It’s a meaningful improvement when you’re sitting on the aircraft for the better part of a day across the Pacific.

Tokyo Narita: The Route for Skiers and Snowboarders

Flights start Saturday, 28 November 2026, running three times a week (Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays).

  • Depart Christchurch: 12:35
  • Arrive Narita: that same evening, Japan time
  • Return service departs Narita: 21:40

The outbound timing is ideal. You’re not waking up at 4am, and you arrive with time for a good night’s rest before heading to your resort or making the most of a day in Tokyo.

Niskeo

Narita is Japan’s main international gateway, with onward connections to anywhere in the country.

On the mainland (Honshu) you’ve got Hakuba Valley, the 1998 Olympic host with ten linked resorts including Happo-One and Hakuba 47. Nozawa Onsen for the ski-and-soak crowd. Shiga Kogen, Japan’s largest ski area. And Myoko Kogen, which cops some of Honshu’s heaviest snowfalls. All within two to three hours of Tokyo by shinkansen, so you can be on the chairlift the same day you fly into Narita.

Up in Hokkaido is where the famous powder lives. Niseko, Furano, Rusutsu, Kiroro. Light, dry, consistent snow through December and February that’s earned a global reputation. Hokkaido is a 90-minute domestic flight from Tokyo

Marina Bay
Singapore and Perth: The Bonus Routes

Christchurch is also getting seasonal direct flights to Singapore, starting Wednesday, 28 October 2026 and running through to late March 2027, three times a week (Wednesdays, Fridays, Sundays).

  • Depart Christchurch: 17:20
  • Arrive Singapore: later that evening, Singapore time
  • Return service departs Singapore: 00:40

And to Perth, starting Monday, 30 November 2026 and running through to early May 2027, three times a week (Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays).

  • Depart Christchurch: 17:45
  • Arrive Perth: that evening, local time
  • Return service departs Perth: 21:15

Perth is useful if you’re building a multi-stop trip that includes Australia. Singapore gets you to Southeast Asia in one go. But for most AMPED travellers heading to snow, the Tokyo route is the star.

What This Means for AMPED Travellers

The new direct route changes the maths on a Japan ski trip. Less travel time, lower total cost, simpler logistics. Whatever your crew looks like, here’s what it unlocks.

Repeat Japan skiers. You’ve done it the hard way. Domestic flight to Auckland, overnight transit, the rest of the day on a long-haul. With one flight straight out of Christchurch, you save a day each way and the cost of a domestic leg. Spend the saving on an extra resort, a guide for the day, or two more nights in Niseko.

First-time Japan skiers. Japan has always been the dream trip, but the logistics put some South Island skiers off. Direct from Christchurch removes the friction. If you’ve been waiting for the right time, this is it. We’ll handle the resort pick, the flights, and the bits in between so your first trip is the best one.

Families. One flight instead of two. Less stress on the kids, less gear to lose at connections, and a real saving when you’re flying four or five people. AMPED packages the flights, transfers, family-friendly lodging like Niseko Village or Rusutsu, and lessons in one go.
