Roughly 20 km northeast of Nagano and along the Joshinetsu Kogen National Park, lies one of Japan’s greatest Snow Resorts in Japan.  A snow resort so grand that it covers multiple mountains, and has over 21 ski fields covering over 800 Km. This massive ski haven of course is the Shiga plateau. Otherwise known as Shiga Kogen, this Behemoth of a snow resort is the largest snow resort in Japan.

Shiga Kogen is a compilation of 21 interlinked snow resorts and truly is a winter wonderland. Land transfers

By train: From Narita Airport (the Tokyo international airport), catch the Narita Express (NEX) train to Tokyo Station (1 hour). There are frequent departures from the airport railway terminal.Upon arrival at Tokyo Station take the escalators up and follow the green signs for the Nagano Shinkansen Asama. Then bus to Shiga Kogen

By road: shuttle, bus or car

Driving times to Shiga Kogen from:

  • Tokyo- 4.5 to 5 hours
  • Narita Airport – 5-6 hours
  • Nagoya – 5 hours
  • Osaka or Kyoto – about 7 hours

Unlike many other resorts which are easy to drive to, the road to Shiga Kogen is often slippery and windy, as such snow tyres and chains are highly recommended to undertake the drive to Shiga Kogen from Yamanuchi town, which takes 20-30 minutes

Shiga Kogen Ski School and Daycare

With Shiga Kogen’s unique 20 field span, rather than having a centralised system, many of the Shiga Kogen hotels have their own facilities.  These include gear hire, lessons and tours, as well as this, numerous ski school options are available in this area for both adults and kids, giving you the option of private, public and group lessons.  Also they have many hire locations make getting ski and board gear simple and affordable.

For Parents, there are multiple day-care facilities on the mountain, junior ski schools, kids’ activities and snow playgrounds in many of the hotels.  Some notable options are the Shiga Kogen Resort, which also offers day care options for kids from 6 months old, with English staff.  Furthermore, the Windsor Hotel also offers child care options for kids from 6 months to 2 years old, as well as lessons.

Close to Myoko Kogen is the Yodel area of Akakura Onsen, with full on snow childcare facilities.  However, if your young ones can’t ski, it may be hard to get them there as there is no direct transportation method.
